Old teak runs through the staircase and the whole upper floor, and the decorative pieces were collected across China and Southeast Asia rather than bought as a set.

Layout

A castle gate opens onto covered parking for two cars. Beyond the double doors, fitted with a bespoke elephant handle, an old teak staircase descends into the open-plan living space, and the Gulf of Thailand fills the far wall. The house keeps several places to sit: a television lounge, a formal dining room and a pool deck wide enough to entertain from.

The infinity edge of the pool reads against tropical planting first and the sea behind it. A fully equipped kitchen sits off the lounge, with staff quarters beside it. Upstairs the teak continues past four bedrooms, each styled differently, each with a king bed and a generous bathroom of its own.

Location

Plai Laem holds the north-eastern headland, and the hills there put a house above the road and out of the noise. Stone finishes and old timber suit the climate better than paint does.

Service

Full-time staff live on the property; breakfast and airport transfers belong to the stay, and the other meals are charged separately.

Old teak underfoot and pieces collected across Asia make the house feel inherited rather than furnished.
